Athens Conscious Parents PDF Print E-mail
Community and Cultural Development Cluster

A collective of parents providing support and sharing experience with others. We come from a variety of parenting philosophies, but all of us share the desire to parent peacefully and consciously- reflecting on what is best for our families, our children, and our planet.

Our Mission...

Inform parents about birthing and parenting practices that may fall outside the mainstream but have been shown to support optimal human development. Examples include extended breastfeeding, babywearing, co-sleeping, unmedicated birth and gentle discipline.

Support families in having their needs met on all levels—physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Connect children, parents and those who serve families with one another as we seek to establish our modern day tribe.

Empower mothers and fathers to listen to their own intuition and inner guidance about the best choices for their families.

CUCUYO, a Dominican folk word for ‘firefly,’ is a center located in the Dominican Republic that guides teenage youth through an investigation of themselves, their culture, and neighboring cultures through the use of theatre, art and other mediums of creative exploration.

In the summer, CUCUYO hosts groups of teenagers from the United States.  During these programs, both populations engage in collaborative art and theatre projects that aim to engender cultural sensitivity, meaningful encounters and friendship between the Dominican and American youth.  An expected side effect is that the teenagers, in such an important formative stage of their lives, will forgo more destructive activities, (i.e. violence, crime, addiction), and opt for this healthy alternative.

F.O.L.K. (Furthering Our Local Knowledge) PDF Print E-mail
Community and Cultural Development Cluster

http://www.folkathens.org

We believe that our generation does not place enough importance on knowledge and art forms that are locally-based. In order to address this situation, the FOLK Society's primary undertaking is to hold bi-monthly lecture series on such topics that we feel have fallen by the wayside, such as local food, Appalachian culture, folk music, etc. We plan to bring to Athens local experts in these fields. We use the term "lecture" loosely as we plan to adapt the medium of each lecture to its specific topic, whether through music, food, discussion, art, or any combination of the like. These lectures will take place in appropriate UGA classes and as public lectures in the evenings, with situationally-appropriate locations.

Food Not Bombs PDF Print E-mail
Food Cluster

Food Not Bombs is based on the notion that if resources were not misallocated on weapons of war and on perpetuating the existing system of individual greed, there would be plenty to meet everyone's basic needs for food, housing, and health care. Food Not Bombs chapters around the world collect fresh food every week that would otherwise go to waste, prepare tasty and nutritious meals with it, and serve it free. By doing so, FNB not only helps the people it feeds, but also brings to light the unjust priorities of a capitalist system that creates great wealth for some, and fails to provide sustenance for others. Food Not Bombs Athens meets at Common Ground Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-8PM.
