Community and Cultural Development Cluster
|
CUCUYO, a Dominican folk word for ‘firefly,’ is a center located in the Dominican Republic that guides teenage youth through an investigation of themselves, their culture, and neighboring cultures through the use of theatre, art and other mediums of creative exploration. In the summer, CUCUYO hosts groups of teenagers from the United States. During these programs, both populations engage in collaborative art and theatre projects that aim to engender cultural sensitivity, meaningful encounters and friendship between the Dominican and American youth. An expected side effect is that the teenagers, in such an important formative stage of their lives, will forgo more destructive activities, (i.e. violence, crime, addiction), and opt for this healthy alternative.
